JERUSALEM/AMMAN - A roadside bomb exploded Thursday afternoon near a convoy of Israeli diplomats travelling in Jordan, but caused no injuries, Jordanian officials said.

According to accounts, the Israeli ambassador to the Hashemite Kingdom, Danny Nevo, was not in any of the vehicles when the bomb went off, about 20 km from the Allenby Bridge, which separates the West Bank from Jordan.

The convoy was apparently traveling from Amman to Israel. The diplomats were escorted to a nearby Jordanian military base and then taken to the border.

Jordan’s minister of state for information, Nabil Sharif, said the diplomats were in two cars that formed part of a larger convoy.

Jordanian security forces have opened an investigation into the blast.

Israel and Jordan signed a peace treaty in 1994.

Israeli diplomats often return home Thursdays, the start of the Muslim weekend in Jordan.
