KOLKATA - A group of suspected Maoist ultras gunned down a Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) activist in West Bengal’s Purulia district Sunday evening, police said.

The shootout took place at Dhadka village under Bandwan police station in the district when a group of unidentified people shot Dhanu Rajak, a member of the party’s district committee, dead near a local market and fled the spot.

“We are investigating the case,” an officer of Bandwan police told IANS by phone.

He said the incident took place around 5 p.m.

Rajak was on the hit-list of the Maoists for a long time, local sources said.
