BAGHDAD - At least six people were killed and 40 injured Thursday in a car bomb attack targeting Shiite pilgrims in Iraq, security and medical sources said.

The attack took place in the Dujail area, some 60 km north of the capital Baghdad.

“A car parked on the side of the road blew up, hitting Shiite visitors who were walking on their way to Imam al-Hassan al-Askari mosque in Samarra,” security sources said.

Shiite pilgrims are heading to Samarra, a majority-Sunni city, 112 km north of Baghdad, to commemorate the death of al-Askari.

The event culminates Saturday.
