LONDON - Many areas of central London had to be shut down Thursday after a man broke into a shop and threatened to blow himself up.

The unnamed man, who broke into a shop in Regent Street, was arrested following a four-hour stand-off with armed officers, The Sun reported.

Police teams rushed to an Accessorize store at 12.20 a.m. following an emergency call and found the man inside, threatening to harm himself.

The area around the female fashion shop, near the Oxford Circus underground station, was immediately cordoned off.

Police negotiators attempted to resolve the situation, and the man finally left the commercial property just after 5 a.m. He was searched and arrested.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “Police were called to a commercial premises in Regent Street shortly after 00.20 a.m. today following an alarm activation. A man has now been detained and is currently in custody.”
