BAGHDAD - UN’s top envoy to Iraq, Ad Melkert, escaped unhurt in a bomb attack on his convoy Tuesday, Xinhua reported.

The attack took place when he was enroute to Baghdad after meeting Shia cleric Ali al-Sistani in southern Najaf city, 160 km south of the capital, an official said requesting anonymity. One policeman was killed and four others injured.

Sistani is the highest-ranking Shia Muslim scholar in Iraq. After meeting with Sistani, Melkert urged the political factions to reach a deal to form a new government.

Ad Melkert, a Dutch politician, was chosen by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as his top envoy in Iraq in 2009.
