GUWAHATI - Two militants of the outlawed United National Liberation Front (UNLF) of Manipur were arrested Tuesday from a rented accommodation in Assam’s main city of Guwahati, officials said.

A police spokesperson said the two UNLF militants, Jai Singh and Ashok Singh, were arrested from Guwahatis Panbazar area.

“Based on specific inputs about the presence of the two UNLF militants, we raided a house and arrested the duo,” a police official said.

Police seized several cell phones, laptops, and extortion demand notes from the arrested rebels.

“The duo was here to extort money from businessman having business interests in Manipur,” the official said.

Police are also looking out for some more UNLF militants in Guwahati based on interrogation of the two arrested rebels.

Guwahati has become a hub for militants from Manipur with most of them sheltered in rented houses in the garb of students or working people to carry out extortion,” the official said.

At least 20 militants from various Manipur-based rebel groups have been arrested from Guwahati in the past six months.
