KOLKATA - A court in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district Tuesday ordered police custody for one Maoist and judicial custody for five others. All the six rebels were arrested Monday, police said.
“Baneshwar Pramanik was remanded to police custody for seven days while five others - Bhagirath alias Putul, Biren Mordhanno, Patel Murmu, Sashadhar Karmakar and Amit Mahato - were remanded to judicial custody for 14 days. They all were produced before the Jhargram additional chief judicial magistrate court Tuesday,” said Praveen Tripathi, police superintendent of Jhargram district.
The rebels were arrested during a search operation by the joint forces from Bhulabheda village of Belpahari area of the district.
The court ordered police custody for Baneshwar as he was wanted in at least 10 cases including sedition, loot and damaging government property, a police officer said.
Defence counsel Kaushik Shina said: “As the police failed to submit any concrete case against the five among the six arrested, the court ordered judicial custody for them.”
