Mich. man gets up to 60 years for homeless murders

PONTIAC, Mich. — An 18-year-old Michigan man has been sentenced to up to 60 years in prison for his role in the slaying of two homeless men in August 2008.

Darrin Higgins Jr. was sentenced Monday in Pontiac. He had pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of 61-year-old Wilford “Frenchie” Hamilton and 65-year-old Lee Hoffman.

Higgins was 17 years old when he was arrested in October 2009, and initially denied any involvement in the beatings.

Two others earlier were convicted and sentenced to life in prison on charges related to the attacks.
