Serial stabbings suspect in court on new charges

FLINT, Mich. — A man suspected in a series of stabbings in three states has appeared in court in Michigan on four new counts of attempted murder and one open murder.

Not guilty pleas were entered Monday on behalf of 33-year-old Elias Abuelazam (eh-lee-AHS’ A’-boo-LAH’-zuhm), who was arraigned via video from the Genesee County jail in Flint. He faces life in prison without parole on the murder count.

Abuelazam also is a suspect in attacks in Virginia and Ohio. He was arrested at an Atlanta airport on Aug. 11 while trying to travel to Israel, his native country.

Abuelazam previously was charged in just one case, the attempted murder of a 26-year-old man.
