The exchange of gunfire between the security forces and the suspected militants ensued from early morning today and continued unabated for many hours. The attack is known to have taken place in an army intelligence office on Khyber Road which houses a number of governmental offices and is only a few blocks away from the US consulate.

According to some Peshawar police officials, some suspected militants who have been captured by the cops were being questioned when the attacks took place, although it still remains unclear whether the attacks were in any way related to the questioning. However, the latest reports have indicated that situation was actually a hostage crisis after the captured militants who were being interrogated seized the weapons from the guards and took them under hostage. A spokesperson of the Pakistani army Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas confirmed to the reporters that the terrorists ‘overpowered two sentries’ and held them as hostages.
