Murder charges filed in Indianapolis party deaths

INDIANAPOLIS — A judge has entered not guilty pleas for three men charged with murder in a shooting at an Indianapolis birthday cookout that killed two people and injured six others.

Other charges against Damion Martin, Devin Staten and Antwan Williams include attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder. The men are being held without bond Friday in the Marion County Jail.

Charles Mays’ son was among those killed just after midnight Aug. 3 when a masked man fired an assault-style rifle at the partygoers on the city’s west side. The 93-year-old father says he hopes the three men “never get out of jail.”

Party host 37-year-old Barbara Johnson died of a gunshot wound to the chest. Fifty-four-year-old guest Charlie Mays had just arrived when he was fatally shot in the back.
