Man gets 22 years in Arizona speed-camera slaying

PHOENIX — A man accused of killing the operator of a speed-camera van parked along a Phoenix freeway has been sentenced to 22 years in prison.

Thomas Patrick Destories was sentenced Friday. He had faced a first-degree murder charge but pleaded guilty to second-degree murder under a plea deal.

The 69-year-old Destories was charged in the April 19, 2009, fatal shooting of Doug Georgianni, who was operating the speed-enforcement van.

Destories’ attorney had argued in court that his client had a history of mental illness going back to 1970, but two psychologists examined him and found him competent to stand trial.

Authorities haven’t said what they believe the motive for the killing was, but say Destories and Georgianni had never met.
