Iranian importer suspected of 11 murders in Brazil

BRASILIA, Brazil — An Iranian man is under arrest in Brazil on suspicion of 11 murders allegedly aimed at protecting his illegal electronics smuggling operation.

Police in the northeastern state of Ceara say 46-year-old Farhad Marvizi hired two rogue officers and other people to carry out the killings in the last two years.

A statement from police does not say if he has a lawyer. Authorities plan a news conference later to give more details.

He and 10 other suspects were detained Thursday.

Marvizi allegedly ran a lucrative ring that skirted duties on computers, digital music players and other electronics from Asia.

An investigation began in 2008 after the group allegedly tried unsuccessfully to kill a customs agent.
