KABUL - Four American soldiers were killed Saturday by a roadside bomb in southern Afghanistan, the military said.

The NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) confirmed the deaths of its troops, but did not reveal their nationalities or the exact location where the explosion took place.

A US military spokesman said that those killed were Americans.

Nearly 400 international soldiers, including more than 250 US troops, have been killed in the Afghan conflict so far this year. At least 70 of those were killed this month.

Around 140,000 US and NATO troops are currently stationed in Afghanistan. At least 10,000 extra US personnel are set to arrive in August, when the combined forces are expected to begin a major operation in the volatile southern region.
