BHUBANESWAR - An hour-long gun battle broke out Friday night between the police and Maoists in a forested area of Orissa’s Malkangiri district, police said. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

The Maoists opened fire when police raided a rebel camp in a forested area near Bejangwada village, Deputy Inspector General of Police Sanjeev Panda told IANS.

“The gun battle took place in an interior area and our people have not yet returned to their base. We are waiting for the details,” Panda said.

Malkangiri district, some 620 km from here, is considered a Maoist stronghold.
