Moscow, July 21 (IANS/RIA Novosti) At least two people were killed and one injured in two suspected terror attacks at a hydropower plant and a police building in Russia’s volatile North Caucasus region Wednesday, a law enforcement source said.

“Unknown assailants believed to be militant fighters burst into the Baksan hydropower plant in the village of Islamei and shot two security guards dead at about 5.00 a.m. (01:00 GMT),” the source said, adding that one person had been hospitalised after the attack.

“At 3.15 a.m. a police building was attacked with a grenade launcher in the city of Baksan. There were no casualties,” the source said.

The assailants also carried out two other blasts inside the Baksan power plant, situated in the southern Russian republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, the source said.

“It cannot be ruled out that we are speaking here about a carefully planned terrorist attack. The attack on the hydropower plant may have been carried out by the same militants who opened fire at the police building,” the source added.

A spokesman for RusHydro, the company managing the power plant, and North Caucasus law enforcers said it could be a terrorist attack.

Russia’s North Caucasus republics witness frequent attacks on police, federal troops and officials.
