MUMBAI, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- Sub inspector of police Daya Nayak who had been suspended over charges of maintaining links with the underworld can now breathe easy. According to a ruling announced yesterday by the Supreme Court of India Daya Nayak’s apparent links with the underworld could not be proved in court.

In a complaint made to the Supreme Court more than two years back, Ketan Tirodkar, a journalist had alleged that Daya Nayak was on friendly terms with Chhota Shakeel and that he engaged in extortion work for the gangster and others of the Mumbai underworld. However Ketan Tirodkar’s complaint was nullified by the Supreme Court on grounds of not having received a sanction from the government before filing his complaint in the apex court of the country.

Daya Nayak had sought the help of the Supreme Court of India after the Bombay High Court was not prepared to interfere in the proceedings that had been initiated against him following the issuing of the complaint in court by the journalist. The statement released by the Supreme Court came as a major reprieve to Daya Nayak. The proceedings that had been initiated by the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act court has now been declared as null and void by the most important legal body in the country.

Speaking to the media after the Supreme Court statement was issued, Shivaji Jadhav, Daya Nayak’s counsel in the extortion case confirmed that it was a lack of government sanction on the part of the complainant which led to the Supreme Court put an end to the case and declare the sub-inspector free of any link to the underworld.
