GUWAHATI - The bodies of six paramilitary troopers from Assam — of the 27 security personnel killed by Maoists Tuesday in Chhattisgarh’s Narayanpur district — arrived here Thursday amid wails from family members.

Senior Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) officials received the bodies at the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati with full state honours.

The dead troopers were identified as K.H.I. Singha, Arun Goyaray, Sohel Rana, Rajendra Nath Das, Dhrubojyoti Das, and Anjan Phukan.

The bodies were then escorted by CRPF officials to their respective homes for the last rites.

The scene at the airport was one charged with emotions with relatives crying inconsolably at the loss of their near ones.

“He was the only breadwinner of the family and now with his death, things would be difficult,” said Bikash Goyaray, a relative of the dead CRPF trooper Arun.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi Thursday announced Rs.200,000 to the families of each of the dead troopers.

“Apart from the financial compensation, we are ready to do whatever possible from our side for the welfare of the families of these martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the country,” the chief minister said.
