Son of former Calif Assembly speaker is sentenced

SAN DIEGO — A judge has sentenced the son of former California Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez to 16 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of a San Diego college student.

Esteban Nunez and co-defendant Ryan Jett were given the maximum sentence for voluntary manslaughter Friday.

Prosecutors say the 21-year-old Esteban Nunez, Jett and two other men were angry because they were refused entry to a party and attacked Luis Santos, stabbing him in the chest, near San Diego State University on Oct. 4, 2008.

The two others pleaded guilty to lesser charges.

Esteban Nunez was arrested the same year his father ended his Assembly tenure as the longest-serving speaker in California’s era of legislative term limits.

The defense argued the men acted in self-defense.
