Federal charges filed against suspected stowaways
COLUMBIA, S.C. — Federal officials have filed charges against two men who were arrested as stowaways on a cargo ship that docked in South Carolina from the Dominican Republic.
U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles says Eddy Martinez Reyees and Jose Miguel Crisostomo-Perez were arrested after they were found at the State Ports Authority docks in Mount Pleasant outside Charleston last week.
A third suspected stowaway was found dead in a cargo container.
Nettles says Reyees is charged with illegally re-entering the United States after a felony conviction and Crisostomo-Perez was charged with illegally entering the country.
Authorities say the men hid in a container and cut a hole in the top to get air. Authorities captured one man on the ship and the other from the water.
