New Yorker who aided Peru rebels freed

LIMA, Peru — Activist Lori Berenson has been released from a Peruvian prison after serving three-quarters of a 20-year sentence for aiding leftist rebels.

The 40-year-old New Yorker left the Santa Monica women’s prison in a car driven by her husband and attorney, Anibal Apari, and surrounded by journalists.

Their son, Salvador, who has been living with his mother since his birth a year ago, was not immediately seen.
