AP sources: Pentagon official eyed for intel job

WASHINGTON — Officials tell The Associated Press that the White House’s leading candidate to replace Dennis Blair as national intelligence director is James R. Clapper.

Clapper currently is the Pentagon’s top intelligence official. Two current U.S. officials and one former military official say he is the leading candidate to replace Dennis Blair, who announced his resignation Thursday.

The two current officials say another candidate is Mike Vickers, the Pentagon’s assistant secretary for special operations. But a Defense Department official says he has not been contacted for an interview.

(This version CORRECTS Clapper’s middle initial is R., not T.)
