Veteran Mafia boss arrested in Italy

ROME — Italian police have arrested a veteran mobster who was on the run for 17 years and was among the most wanted men of the ‘ndrangheta organized crime group.

Giovanni Tegano was on the list of Italy’s top 30 most wanted fugitives. The 70-year-old is considered a prominent member of the ‘ndrangheta, a crime syndicate based in the southern Italian region of Calabria.

Interior Minister Roberto Maroni said Tuesday that Tegano’s arrest is the “hardest blow that could be dealt to the ‘ndrangheta today.”

News reports said Tegano was apprehended Monday evening in a house in Reggio Calabria, and did not resist arrest. The reports said he must serve a life sentence.
