GUWAHATI - Five militants from a banned outfit in Manipur were arrested in Assam Thursday when the group was on way to a base camp for arms training, officials said.

A police spokesperson said the rebels from the outlawed People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK) were arrested from near Jorabat on the outskirts of Guwahati.

“Based on specific inputs that a group of PREPAK militants were travelling in a vehicle, we set up road checks and intercepted their vehicle and managed to arrest them,” a police official said.

The five arrested militants told police interrogators that they were going to Tinsukia district in eastern Assam. From there, they were scheduled to go Arunachal Pradesh for arms training.

“We believe the PREPAK militants were going to some training base along the Arunachal-Myanmar border,” the official said.

The PREPAK is fighting for an independent homeland for the majority Metei community in Manipur.
