Danton OK’d to play hockey in Canada

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia — A former St. Louis Blues player convicted of conspiracy to commit murder will be allowed to play hockey for a Halifax university.

The athletic director at Saint Mary’s University says Wednesday that correctional officials have cleared Mike Danton to move to Nova Scotia.

Steve Sarty says Danton, who was convicted in 2004 of conspiracy to commit murder, will join the hockey team. Danton is expected to arrive on campus within days, but it’s unlikely he’ll suit up right away.

Danton was sentenced to 7 1/2 years in prison for his role in a murder-for-hire plot. The native of Brampton, Ont., pleaded guilty in 2004 and spent nearly five years in prison in the United States.

Danton has two years of college eligibility left.
