SRINAGAR - The stand off between security forces and an guerrilla holed up in a mosque in the Kashmir Valley ended Tuesday morning after the gunman succumbed to injuries, police said.

The security forces removed the cordon around the mosque in Dabban village in Bandipora district after the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) member died.

The mosque was surrounded after a guerrilla injured in a gunfight entered it Monday afternoon.

The local Imam and village elders tried to persuade the guerrilla to surrender but he refused to do so, police said.

In deference to the sanctity of the mosque, the security forces did not retaliate even after the holed up militant hurled a grenade at the troops from inside,” a police officer said.

He was critically injured in the exchange of fire between the security forces and guerrillas during which one militant was killed Monday.

Both the slain guerrillas belonged to LeT and were foreigners, police said.
