Minn’s Mbakwe avoids trial in assault case

MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota basketball recruit Trevor Mbakwe has chosen not to go to trial on felony assault charges and will instead enroll in a pre-trial program.

Upon completion, the state of Florida will drop its case against him and there will be no criminal conviction on his record.

The case has dragged on for more than a year. Mbakwe missed all of last season because Gophers athletic director Joel Maturi ruled he could not play until his case was settled.

Mbakwe is not admitting guilt by agreeing to the program. He will have to do 100 hours of community service and make a $100 donation to a Florida center for abuse victims. He also has been ordered to stay away from the woman who accused him of the assault in Miami last year.
