Excerpts from Van der Sloot confession

Excerpts from the signed June 6 confession of Joran van der Sloot, who was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and robbery in the killing of Stephany Flores, a Peruvian business student whom he met while playing poker in a Lima casino.

In the confession, a transcript of which was obtained by The Associated Press, Van der Sloot is questioned by a prosecutor in the presence of a state-appointed defense attorney.

Van der Sloot spoke in Dutch, with a translator approved by the Dutch Embassy translating his comments into Spanish. The Spanish has been translated into English by the AP.

Van der Sloot says Flores wanted to continue playing poker online so the two went to his hotel in her SUV at about 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 30.

“We went to my room and played poker on my laptop, and at that time I opened my e-mail and saw a message saying, ‘I’m going to kill you, you little Mongoloid,’ referring to the ‘Holoway (sic) case’ … “

The suspect says he then explained to Flores that he had been arrested and was a suspect in the May 30, 2005 disappearance in Aruba of U.S. teen Natalee Holloway.

Upon hearing the information, Flores “struck me on the left side of my head with her fist.”

“In that moment I impulsively hit her with my right elbow in the face exactly on the nose. There was a lot of blood all over the place. I think that she was half fainting. It affected me so much that I took her by the neck with both hands and I strangled her for a minute. At that moment I thought, ‘What am I doing?’ I got up thinking, ‘What can I do now?’ and I also had blood on my shirt. There was also blood on the bed so I took my shirt, placed it on her face pressing hard until I killed Stephany …”

Asked what his motive was in killing Flores:

“She hit me in the head. I lost control of my actions, I didn’t know what I was doing. I remember what I was doing but not the motive. It was an impulsive act after receiving a blow to the head.”

Asked the same question again:

“I don’t know. I simply don’t know what I was thinking.”

Asked why he fled the scene instead of turning himself in:

“I wasn’t thinking clearly. The only thing I wanted was to leave the scene of the crime as quickly as possible and afterward leave the country …”

Asked for a detailed description of the killing:

“She was on the bed when I hit her hard with my right elbow and I think her head went back and hit the wall, then she begins to bleed, immediately I get on top of her and with both hands I begin to strangle her, keeping her that way for a minute. After that, I throw her to the floor but she keeps breathing. At that moment I take off my shirt and put it on her face, pressing on it. I don’t remember for how long but she stops breathing, in this way I think I caused her death.”

He is told that amphetamines were found in Flores’ body and is asked if he gave her anything to drink with amphetamines:

“No.”

He is asked if he and Flores drank any alcohol at the casino Atlantic City:

“I (drank) Pepsi-Cola and Pisco sour and whisky Cola and Stephany I think was drinking wine. I drank about 10 drinks starting at 6 p.m.”

Asked if he has anything to add to the confession:

“I wish to talk about the Natelle Holoway (sic) case from five years ago and the possibility that if this trial goes quickly and fluidly it could be possible for me to be extradited to Aruba. I wish to discuss the case but not at the moment. It’s a case that is years old and I would prefer to speak with the Aruban police and if there is the possibility of closing the case I would be ready to clarify the case …”
